Trong câu giả định, người ta dùng dạng nguyên thể không có “to” của các động từ sau một số động từ chính mang tính cầu khiến. Thường có “that” trong câu giả định trừ một số trường hợp đặc biệt.

Câu giả định với "would rather... that"

- Diễn tả một yêu cầu ở hiện tại

S1 + would rather that + S2 + V-inf
Eg: My mother would rather that my sister learn how to play the piano.

(Mẹ tôi muốn chị gái tôi học chơi đàn piano.)

- Diễn tả một yêu cầu đối lập với hiện tại:

S1 + would rather that + S2 + V2/ed

Eg: I’d rather my teacher gave fewer compositions tonight.

(Tôi muốn giáo viên cho ít bài tập hôm nay) 

Chú ý: Mệnh đề sau “that” có thể dùng ở thể phủ định. Nếu động từ ở mệnh đề đó là “be” thì chia “were” ở tất cả các ngôi.

Eg: I would rather that my father weren’t a pilot.

(Tôi muốn bố mình không phải là bác sĩ.)

- Diễn tả một yêu cầu đối lập với quá khứ:

S1 + would rather that + S2 + had V3/ed

Eg: She would rather that she had explained to him.

(Cô ấy ước rằng cô đã giải thích với anh ấy.)

Câu giả định đi sau động từ

Câu giả định sẽ được thành lập khi đi với các động từ sau:

Cấu trúc: S1 + V + that + S2 + V-inf

Eg: I advise that you should withdraw your allegation before I contact my lawyer.

(Tôi khuyên bạn nên rút lại cáo buộc của mình trước khi tôi liên hệ với luật sư của mình.)

Chú ý: Nếu bỏ “that” ở câu trên thì chủ ngữ 2 sẽ trở thành tân ngữ và động từ thứ 2 sẽ chuyển từ thể nguyên mẫu (V-inf) sang thể nguyên mẫu có “to” (to-V).

Eg: I advise you to withdraw your allegation before I contact my lawyer.

(Tôi khuyên bạn nên rút lại cáo buộc của mình trước khi tôi liên hệ với luật sư của mình.)

Câu giả định dùng với tính từ

Các tính từ trong câu giả định bao gồm:

Cấu trúc: It + be + adj + that + S + V (không chia)

Eg: It is mandatory that you provide all module names.

(Bạn bắt buộc phải cung cấp tất cả các tên mô-đun.)

Câu giả định dùng với “it is time”

Cấu trúc 1: Đã đến lúc phải làm gì

It is time (for somebody) to do something

Eg: It is time for us to hang out.

(Đã đến lúc chúng ta đi chơi rồi).

Cấu trúc 2: Đã đến lúc làm gì (thường đến trễ 1 tí)

It is high/ about time subject + S + V2/ed

Eg: It is high time I got to the airport.

(Đã đến lúc I phải ra sân bay) => Hơi trễ 1 chút.

Trong câu này, "high" và "about" được thêm vào câu để nhấn mạnh ý.

Câu giả định trong các trường hợp đặc biệt

- Câu giả định còn dùng được trong một số câu cảm thán, thường bao hàm các thế lực siêu nhiên.

Eg: God save my family! (Thần phù hộ cho gia đình tôi.)

- Dùng sau động từ “may” ở một số trường hợp sau:

+ Come what may: dù thế nào đi chăng nữa

Eg: Come what may I always be with you

(Dù thế nào đi chăng nữa thì tôi sẽ luôn bên bạn).

+ May as well not do something … if …: Có thể đừng … nếu không …

Eg: You may as well not come if you don’t want to. (Bạn có thể không đến nếu bạn không muốn).

+ May/ might (just) as well do something: chẳng mất gì mà lại không làm …

Eg: Because it’s free, I may as well do try. (Vì nó miễn phí, nên tôi chẳng mất gì mà không thử).

+ Cấu trúc: May + S + linking verbs + Adj. hoặc May + S + V + complement: Cầu chúc cho

Eg: May you be happy. (Chúc cho bạn luôn hạnh phúc).

- If need be: nếu cần

Eg: If need be we can buy another house. (Nếu cần chúng ta hãy mua ngôi nhà khác).

Dùng với “if this be” trong trường hợp muốn nêu ra một giả định từ phía người nói nhưng không thật chắc chắn lắm về khả năng.

Eg: If this be lucky person, you would be chosen. (Nếu là một người may mắn thì bạn có thể được chọn.)
