A. Cấu Trúc

1. Cấu trúc so sánh hơn

So sánh hơn của tính từ ngắn:

S1 + adj - er + than + S2

He’s taller than me

So sánh hơn của tính từ dài

S + more + adj + than + S2

She’s more difficult to deal with than her brother so be careful

2. Cấu trúc so sánh bằng

As + adj/adv + as

hoặc So + adj/adv + as (ít dùng hơn)

VD: Nam is as young as my son.

3. So sánh hơn nhất

So sánh nhất của tính từ ngắn:

The + ADJ/ADV + -est

He’s the tallest person in his class.

So sánh nhất của tính từ dài

The most + ADJ/ADV

Tuy nhiên chúng ta cũng có thể dùng tính từ sở hữu (my, his, her, our….) trong một số trường hợp thay cho mạo từ “the”.

 

LƯU Ý: 

Cách phân biệt giữa tính từ ngắn và tính từ dài

• Tính từ ngắn chỉ có một âm tiết.

Ví dụ: hard, thin, thick, smart, dumb, fast, fat, slow, long, short...

• Tính từ dài có từ hai âm tiết trở lên. 

ví dụ: handsome, beautiful, difficult, 

Một số tính từ đặc biệt và bất quy tắc khác:

• Những tính từ dài nhưng tận cùng bằng -er, -le, -ow, -et, được coi như một tính từ ngắn. (ví dụ: clever ⇒ cleverer; simple ⇒ simpler; quiet ⇒ quieter).
• Gấp đôi phụ âm với những tính từ ngắn, nếu sau phụ âm là một nguyên âm (ví dụ: big ⇒ bigger)
• Với những tính từ và trạng từ có hai âm tiết mà tận cùng bằng -y, ta chuyển -y thành -i rồi thêm đuôi -er hoặc -est. (ví dụ: easy ⇒ easier; dirty ⇒ dirtier).
• Trạng từ có hai âm tiết mà tận cùng bằng -ly lại dùng như tính từ dài. (ví dụ: slowly⇒  more slowly).
